Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency

 The Obstetrician-Gynecology Residency Program includes:

  • 4-year program with 8 residents each year
  • 20 months of obstetrics
  • 19 months of gynecology
  • Additional rotations, including electives

The program is fully accredited by the ACGME. Residents are eligible for Certification by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology upon satisfactory completion of the program.

The program involves extensive training at two of Greater Cincinnati’s top medical facilities: Bethesda North and Good Samaritan hospitals.

Good Samaritan Hospital

The oldest and largest private teaching and tertiary health care facility in Greater Cincinnati, Good Samaritan Hospital continues to be acknowledged for its highly-rated cardiac care, maternity programs and rehabilitation services. Good Samaritan Hospital has a world-ranked Level 3 Newborn Intensive Care Unit and delivers more babies than any area hospital. The US News and World Report rated Good Samaritan Hospital amongst the top 50 gynecology services in the United States. The only other Ohio institutions sharing the distinction were Cleveland Clinic, Case Western, and Ohio State hospitals.

With nearly 7,000 deliveries annually, Good Samaritan Hospital has the largest single-hospital obstetrics service in Southwestern Ohio. As a Level 3 Tertiary Care Perinatal Center, TriHealth offers the latest techniques for fetal and newborn care for high-risk mothers. An active maternal transport system makes us the major referral source for high-risk patients from outlying areas. The services include comprehensive antenatal diagnostic services at the Seton Center for Advanced Obstetrics, a 16-bed Antepartum High-Risk Unit, 24 Labor/Delivery/Recovery rooms, a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (Level 3), and newborn nursery.

Good Samaritan’s gynecologic service admits 1,000 new patients each year. Its physicians perform 1,500 major surgeries and 1,800 minor surgeries annually. The general gynecology division offers expertise in operative laparoscopy, operative hysteroscopy, laser and electrosurgery, as well as conventional operative gynecology. The Urogynecology division of Good Samaritan Hospital is headed by a board-certified obstetrician-gynecologist, fellowship-trained in lower urinary tract dysfunction, pelvic organ prolapse, and other complicated pelvic disorders. A three-year Urogynecology Fellowship Training Program is offered at Good Samaritan Hospital. Gynecologic oncology consists of major oncologic cases, management of chemotherapy and radiation therapy, and the continuity of patient care that is critical for residency training. Approximately 3,000 gynecologic visits to the outpatient clinic occur each year. In addition to the routine gynecology clinics, there are specialty clinics in colposcopy, gynecologic oncology, and reproductive endocrinology. There is also a busy high-risk obstetric clinic, where patients are seen on a weekly basis and admitted to the special care unit when necessary. This unit is staffed by experienced Labor and Delivery personnel and is devoted solely to the care of the complicated obstetric patient. Residents have responsibility for the hospital care of these patients, under the supervision of the perinatology staff.

Bethesda North Hospital

Located in the Northeast suburb of Montgomery, Bethesda North Hospital has grown from a community hospital to a full service facility with maternity and fertility services; state-of-the-art surgery, including open-heart surgery; a free-standing outpatient surgery center; an open MRI; and the tri-state’s second busiest adult Emergency Department.

Bethesda demonstrates its excellence in women’s health in many ways. Bethesda North Hospital will deliver more than 4,000 babies this year. The Bethesda OB/GYN Center provides a continuity of care where women in the community can receive prenatal and gynecological care from residents under the supervision of attending staff. The Bethesda Center for Reproductive Health and Fertility has established itself in technological advances in infertility treatment. The environment at Bethesda is challenging, progressive and changing.

During their training, TriHealth Residents have a variety of clinical experiences at different Bethesda locations. These locations include Bethesda Warren County and the Bethesda Family Practice Center in addition to the Bethesda Continuity of Care Clinic. The Warren County Clinic is an extension of the OB/GYN Center, located in a rural setting, where residents hold a prenatal clinic twice a week. The Bethesda Family Practice Center is a clinic in an office model setting that provides primary care for both private and public patients. This center is the primary clinical site for the Bethesda Family Practice Residency Program, and where our OB/GYN Residents receive their primary experience.
