Bethesda North Hospital PGY1 Residency Program Purpose

The postgraduate year one (PGY1) pharmacy residency program builds on the doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training. Graduates of the PGY1 pharmacy residency program at Bethesda North Hospital will be well-rounded, competent clinical pharmacists able to provide patient-focused pharmaceutical care in the hospital setting. Additionally, graduates will be able to precept a variety of pharmacy learners.

Requirements of the Residency:

Required Rotations (One Month Each)

  • Infectious Diseases
  • Cardiology
  • Medical/Surgical ICU
  • Cardiovascular ICU
  • Emergency Medicine
  • Ambulatory Care

Elective Rotation Choices (Length varies)

  • Malignant Hematology
  • Clinical Informatics
  • Endocrine (Ambulatory)
  • Neurovascular Intensive Care
  • Neonatal ICU
  • General Cardiology
  • Heart Failure Clinic
  • Population Health
  • Pharmacogenomics
  • Repeat of required rotation at Advanced Level

Other electives may be taken into consideration depending on the resident’s learning goals and the Site’s ability to provide a qualified rotation.

Pharmacy Administration

  • Participation on P&T and other committees
  • Drug Monograph
  • Medication Use Evaluation (MUE)
  • Pharmacy Grand Rounds

Staffing

  • Medication Reconciliation
  • Pharmacokinetics

Code Blue Team

Research Project

  • Present at ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting
  • Present at Great Lakes Pharmacy Residency Conference

Teaching

  • Precepting IPPE/APPE pharmacy students
  • Inservices provided to Pharmacy staff, Nursing, Providers
  • Teaching certificate available at the University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy

Requirements for applying and application process

Applicants must be graduates of an Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) accredited degree program and be eligible for licensure in the State of Ohio.Bethesda North Hospital participates in the Resident Matching Program and The Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS). Applicants must abide by all rules and regulations of the Resident Matching Program and PhORCAS.
