Cardiac Bypass Surgery

Our team of cardiologists at the TriHealth Heart & Vascular Institute offers both traditional and less invasive options to open blocked arteries.

What to Expect

You and your loved ones will receive in depth pre- and post-operative education using videotapes, written materials and one-on-one discussions with nurses, dietitians and occupational therapists. We offer spacious rooms, open visitation and a comprehensive education program so your family can more fully participate in your care.

How Cardiac Bypass Surgery Works

Coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) is an operation that uses blood vessels to bypass clogged heart arteries and restore circulation. This procedure, also known as coronary revascularization or bypass surgery can be performed to resolve a single blockage, or blockages in multiple clogged arteries. Surgeons cut into the chest and sternum in a process called a median sternotomy. Bypass surgery is followed by weeks of rest and cardiac rehabilitation, as specified by the surgeon on a patient-by-patient basis.

Robotic Cardiac Bypass Surgery: Pioneering Cardiac Care in Cincinnati

At the TriHealth Heart & Vascular Institute, our specialists participate in ongoing clinical research, which means you have access to emerging, life-saving technology. We were the first in Cincinnati to use the da Vinci robot for bypass surgery as an alternative to traditional open heart surgery, where the breast bone is cut (sternotomy) and the ribs are opened. This procedure, offered specifically at Bethesda North Hospital, is much less invasive than conventional open heart surgery, meaning a faster recovery and significantly less pain for you.

How Robotic Cardiac Bypass Surgery Works

Our team of cardiothoracic surgeons at Bethesda North Hospital performs more robotic-assisted bypass surgeries, and more complex cases, than any hospital in the region. This includes surgery on patients with multiple blockages or with compound cardiac issues, such as a blockage with a congenital heart defect that needs to be addressed.

With the most cardiac robotic-assisted surgery experience in the region, our dedicated team is an international example of cardiac robotic excellence. TriHealth’s Bethesda North Hospital is one of only a handful of hospitals nationally:

  • Designated as an international robotic surgery training facility
  • Assisting in the development of new surgical tools for the da Vinci robot
  • Offering one of only three robotic-surgery fellowship programs in the world

Benefits of Robotic Cardiac Bypass Surgery

When performed robotically with the da Vince Surgical System, the bypass is done with unparalleled precision and control through a few small incisions along the side of the chest. In addition to avoiding the pain and trauma rib spreading, this may provide several patient benefits, including:

  • Less risk of infection
  • Less blood loss and need for blood transfusions
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Significantly less pain and scarring
  • Faster recovery
  • Quicker return to normal activities

As with any surgery, these benefits cannot be guaranteed, as surgery is both patient- and procedure-specific. While robotic-assisted bypass is considered safe and effective, it may not be appropriate for every individual. Always ask your doctor about all treatment options, as well as their risks and benefits.
