At the TriHealth Heart & Vascular Institute we strive to offer minimally invasive treatment options so you can heal faster and return to your normal life, free of pain. Robotic-assisted cardiac surgery is offered at Bethesda North Hospital, the region’s leader in robotic-assisted cardiac care.
Our surgeons use leading edge technology to perform the following cardiac procedures:
Traditional cardiac surgery involves a sternotomy, or cutting through the breastbone and opening the ribs. Cutting through the body’s natural protective structure for the heart can cause significant trauma, prolong healing time and increase the risk for serious complications – even resulting in mortality.
Robotic-assisted heart surgery is less invasive, as it does not require opening up the chest. Instead, the surgeon operates through several small incisions along the side of the chest. The robotic arms of the da Vinci Surgical System operate within these ports, with the surgeon in full control of their actions throughout the procedure.
Though it may be less invasive, robotic technology does not compromise the surgeon’s ability to complete difficult cardiac procedures. Rather, it allows the surgeon to perform a more precise operation than is available through open heart surgery.
In addition to avoiding the pain and trauma of rib spreading, robotic-assisted surgery may provide other patients benefits, including:
