Hip Replacement

Orthopedic surgeons at TriHealth Orthopedic & Sports Institute and Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine offer reliable and long-lasting total hip replacements to relieve hip pain and restore hip function. Our surgeons offer the latest advances in hip replacements, including outpatient hip replacement surgery and hip replacement without narcotics. Our expertise has earned us Advanced Certification in Total Hip and Knee Replacement from the Joint Commission, a rare designation that few hospitals achieve.

Hip Replacement

During total hip replacement, your orthopedic surgeon removes painful parts of your hip joint and replaces them with a new metal and plastic joint. They will replace the top of the leg bone (femoral head) as well as the socket (acetabulum) where the leg bone meets the hip. Hip replacements are long-lasting and offer pain relief while still allowing you to use your hip.

Hip replacement causes

You may need a hip replacement to relieve pain if you experience:

  • Arthritis of the hip
  • Childhood hip disease (congenital hip dysplasia)
  • Hip dislocation
  • Hip fracture

Hip replacement options

Your orthopedic surgeon can use different approaches or techniques for total hip replacement. There is not one approach that is right for every patient and each approach has benefits and drawbacks. Your TriHealth orthopedic specialist will work with you to choose the right surgery for your hip.

Anterior approach to hip replacement

In this approach to hip replacement, your surgeon makes an incision in the front of your hip in order to reach the joint. Your surgeon will then remove damaged parts of the joint and put in the replacement joint. This approach may have a faster recovery than the posterior approach to hip replacement.

Posterior approach to hip replacement

In this approach to hip replacement, your surgeon will make an incision in the back of your hip. He or she will need to also cut through some muscle to get to the hip joint. After replacing the damaged parts of the joint, they will sew the muscle back together and close the incision.

Recovery from hip replacement surgery can take between six to eight weeks and includes physical therapy. The more you participate in physical therapy and follow your care team’s instructions, the better your recovery will be.

Hip replacement risks

All surgeries, including hip replacement surgery, has risks. At TriHealth Orthopedic & Sports Institute and Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine, we strive to reduce these risks as much as possible. Our efforts have resulted in a complication and infection rate that is ten times lower the national average.

However, risks of hip replacement surgery may include:

  • Bleeding
  • Hip dislocation
  • Infection
  • Leg-length inequality
  • Nerve damage
  • Wear or loosening of replacement parts

Hip replacement outcomes

Your hip replacement surgery should relieve your hip pain and allow you to continue using your hip to walk, stand and complete other daily activities. Your doctor may recommend avoiding high impact activities, such as jumping or running, to help your hip replacement last longer.
