TriHealth’s Bethesda North Hospital was recently selected to participate in the OASIS-AMICS Trial, a national study focused on improving outcomes for patients experiencing cardiogenic shock, one of the most serious complications of a heart attack.
This selection makes Bethesda North one of 20 early active sites for the study, placing the hospital at the forefront of advancing care for some of the sickest heart attack patients. Being selected as an OASIS study site recognizes the expertise of Bethesda North and TriHealth Heart & Vascular Institute physicians, nurses and clinical teams, and gives TriHealth the opportunity to help shape the future of heart shock treatment.
Cardiogenic shock refers to a life-threatening condition that occurs when the heart suddenly can no longer pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs, and it often happens following a severe heart attack. The study hopes to expand understanding of which treatment approaches lead to the best outcomes, recovery and quality of life for future patients.
The OASIS research is aimed at helping physicians better understand which treatment strategies are associated with safer care and improved outcomes, with the goal of generating real-world evidence that can guide future best practices that could potentially guide clinicians to helping more patients survive cardiogenic shock.
And with heart disease remaining one of the leading causes of death in America today, the insight gained from trials like OASIS has implications on a large population of patients.
“Even people who never participate in a clinical trial can benefit from today's research if or when it becomes tomorrow's standard of care,” said Jessica Carter BSN RN, a nurse manager at Bethesda North Hospital’s Cardiac Catheter Lab who is assisting with the OASIS research.

The TriHealth Heart & Vascular Institute team also had the opportunity to send some representatives to a recent quarterly OASIS Investigator Meeting, where Carter, alongside Drs. Najamul Ansari and Robert Sturm III, accepted various recognitions on behalf of the team. Among the recognitions were four of the six national site awards presented by the group:
